About Michael J. Powers

Michael Powers provides creative and innovative solutions to complex situations. He concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation and counseling clients on insurance and health care fraud. He helps clients develop litigation strategies tailored to fit particular jurisdictions and that align with the long-term objectives of his clients

Evaluating risk helps to minimize it

Michael works with large national insurers offering various auto, property and casualty, workers' compensation and health insurance policies. He advises clients on strategies to combat fraud and on litigation including pre-complaint litigation strategies, discovery, trial preparation, settlement negotiations and appeals. Michael has extensive experience in evaluating risks for clients and determining strategies to minimize them. His work frequently involves Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and fraud matters in federal and state courts across the country.

Michael has extensive experience working with insurers nationwide to identify fraudulent claim trends and the parties driving systemic fraudulent claims activity even before such claims are made. He also has ongoing relationships with medical experts who can assist in evaluating potential fraud, as well as other subject matter experts.

Before joining Katten, Michael worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable Julian A. Cook, Jr. in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

While in law school, he served as managing notes editor for the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform and published a note with the same journal. As an undergraduate, Michael received the William Jennings Bryan Leadership Prize. Michael is also a member of the firmwide Associates Committee.
