Katten has a pro bono program that has been recognized as a national model by the American Bar Association (Pro Bono Publico Award, 2016), the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (Beacon of Justice Award, 2014), and numerous other organizations.

Katten attorneys and other legal professionals give their time, resources and talent to serve individuals and organizations in need, to engage in important national litigation, and to partner with local legal service providers to ensure access to the justice system.

In 1993, Katten became one of the first law firms to employ a partner to lead the pro bono program on a full-time basis. Chicago attorney Jonathan Baum serves as our Director of Pro Bono Services. Jonathan actively engages with members of firm leadership and community leaders to determine the areas most in need where Katten can provide the best services possible. He also partners with our clients to create opportunities for in-house counsel to serve community interests alongside Katten attorneys.

Katten's pro bono program provides a wide array of services to the underprivileged, including litigation—on behalf of individuals and groups in housing and public accommodations discrimination, civil liberties, immigration, criminal defense, prisoners' rights and consumer matters—and transactional pro bono work—in corporate and tax assistance for nonprofit organizations, intellectual property law, employee benefits and international trade law concerns.

We encourage our attorneys to become involved in pro bono projects with the same unwavering dedication, commitment to hard work and legal excellence that they bring to all matters. We proactively identify our attorneys' particular pro bono interests and then match them with corresponding opportunities. Program participants receive specific pro bono training and billable hour credit. We also provide special, hands-on pro bono programs for summer associates. Through the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) fellowship program, we support incoming associate employment at public interest agencies.

The firm recognizes outstanding pro bono service with its annual Pro Bono Service Awards. The awards are presented to partners and associates who have made valuable contributions to their communities and those in need of legal representation. The awards include a $1,000 honorarium that the recipients donate to charities of their choice.
